Spring: The Hunt for the Perfect Outdoor Swing

For the past few years, my wife has been asking me to put a swing in our backyard. She would really like to sit and swing while she relaxes and enjoys the beautiful evenings in the Pacific Northwest. And for years now, I have been promising her that I would build her the perfect swing….still with no results.

At first I thought I would simply build a Classic 6’ swing in our backyard and that would suffice. Yet the more I surveyed our yard and the existing landscape, I simply could not decide if that type of swing is the best fit for our situation.

So I started to search out the different types of swings that exist for yards and more specifically those that are built for the enjoyment of adults rather than children. While there are many elaborate setups for children, finding just the perfect design for my wife was a little bit more challenging.

So the hunt began. Following are the types of swings I discovered:

THE CLASSIC 6’ FOOT SWING: Pretty simple concept if you yard has the space to accommodate the structure. The swing is simply a wooden A-Frame type of structure with multiple seating configurations available. For more information on building a Classic Swing, visit: How to build a Classic Swing

THE PORCH SWING: The porch swing installation can be a little more challenging depending on the type of support structures you have on your porch. The nice thing about a porch swing is that it doesn’t have to be placed on a porch….if the install would be to difficult. YARD GLIDER: This version is not what I originally set out looking for, but the more I reviewed its potential, the more I liked the idea of a Glider. Very similar to a swing in comfort and functionality, the glider is designed to be easily moved from location to location within your yard and in most cases does not take up the space of a more traditional swing. Since this type of swing comes in all sizes and styles, this type of swing is perfect for the Apartment patio to the sprawling back acre.

THE TREE SWING: Probably the most widely used type of swings for children of all ages; the historical Tree Swing is gaining popularity among adults as well. The challenge of installing the Tree Swing is dependant on two critical factors; having a tree with the strength and branching capable of supporting the weight of the swing and participant and having the courage to reach that branch to install the swing ropes.

PATIO SWING: While similar to the Classic 6’ swing, the Patio Swing is constructed of aluminum instead of wood. While not as grand as the Classic swing, the patio swing offers a lightweight and portable solution to adding a swing to most backyard configurations.

Clearly there are many options to choose from when deciding on the type of swing to place in your backyard. To complicate matters even more, there are just as many types of materials you can choose from in which the swings are constructed.

In the end it really boils down to the simple fundamentals: 1. How much space does your yard have for a swing, 2. What type of material will look best in your yard and 3. How portable do you need your swing to be? Once you have answered all of these questions, your choice will be simplified a great deal when making your final decision.

Gift Buying in this Credit Crunch

Let's start by taking a look at where we are; we are now at the beginning of spring as well as still being at the beginning of 2009 and still many of us are left wondering how did the economy get in such a bad state so quickly? And how are we going to get through this growing recession?

Feeling the pinch

Sadly the credit crunch/recession is something that will affect most of us at some point and it is because of this fact that most, if not all of us are tightening the money belt and ultimately cutting back on many luxuries. This could mean saying bye bye to the Friday night take out, waving adios to your Saturday night on the town or simply just switching supermarket. There are hundreds of people now telling us how to live our lives and thousands of websites cropping up that claim to have the answers of how we beat the credit crunch/recession. Well this is all well and good but no matter how much we cut back we can't cut back on mandatory expenses such as bills and however much we don't want to think about it we still have those yearly expenses rolling round that mean we have to fork out on gifts.

Sadly a lot of people take out their cutbacks on sending gifts. Let's look at the facts; last year 48% of people planned to spend less on presents and 27% of people had the intention of buying gifts for fewer people as an attempt to save money. But is this really the answer??
Buying Gifts in a Credit Crunch/Recession!?

When you think about the amount of occasions that exist in a year you will see there are actually quite a lot! Birthdays, weddings, mother's day, father's day, Easter, anniversaries as well as Valentines day, saying thank you and of course Christmas. That's a lot of gifts; that's a lot of money! Well I can happily say that there is no need to break the bank and have to live off canned food for a month, nor is there a need to turn into scourge and stop celebrating certain events. All you need to know is where to look and what to buy.

There are so many thoughtful and interesting gifts available that will not only be very much welcomed but that also won't cost you the earth, examples do I hear you say? Well then, as it is springtime, how about gardening and flower gifts? For all the green fingers out there you are able to treat them to gifts such as grow your own sunflowers or maybe a gardening holdall filled with goodies such as metal gardening tools including a fork and trowel, hand cream especially for the gardener, nail brush and gardening gloves.

If however their favourite part of the house is the kitchen as opposed to the garden then you can pick up inexpensive gifts such as hampers or gift boxes filled with wine, cheese, cookies, retro sweets or chocolate. This depends on the individuals taste and preference but in many cases you are often able to buy gift baskets that provide a combination of all of these so you can never go wrong!

There are so many gift sets and boxes available such as candles, tea sets, household items and games and puzzles. All of these items are inexpensive but say exactly what you want to say. They are perfect for whatever occasion you need a gift for.

So next time you have a birthday or anniversary etc coming up, don't panic! Just think of all the wonderful gift hampers, sets and boxes that are available and treat your loved one in style but still on a budget!
